I went out tonight and shared my story with some friends over dinner. Below is the conversation I had with my six year old son when I got home.
“Honey, I was brave tonight!”
“You were? What did you do?”
“I told some of my friends about my hair.”
“You mean that you don’t exactly have long hair?”
“Yes, exactly.”
“Are you going to start telling more people about your hair?”
“I think so, honey. How does that make you feel?”
(Without missing a beat): “It makes me feel happy for you, because then you could dive in the water.”
“That would make me happy too!”
“And then your hair wouldn’t come off.”
“Because then people might be like – “
(Making a crazy face): “Whaaaa???”
(Arms up in the air): “What just happened there???”
(And then we laughed and I kissed him and we both went to bed.)
The thing is, I fully expected him to answer that he was worried what his friends might think – and I would have completely understood if he had said that. Instead he did not hesitate for a second to say he would be HAPPY for me… because he wants me to be free. What a gift. <3
